Diabetes Diet – Controlling Your Type 2 Diabetes with
Diet

Being diagnosed with diabetes can be very scary no matter how old or young you are. The first thing that runs
through most people's minds is that they will end up having to be on medication for the rest of their lives.
While this may be true there are things you can do to reduce the impact of this disease on your life and the
amount of medications you will have to take. In most cases Type 2 diabetes is related to diet and obesity so it
only stands to reason that you should be able to control diabetes with diet.
In essence a diabetic diet is nothing more than
a good healthy diet, it does not mean having to go out and by specialty foods that cost a lot of money and are hard
to find. Finding information on a diet for Type 2 diabetes is really not that hard as there is plenty of
information available both from your doctor and online.
The hardest part is sticking to it, especially if you are the kind of person who is used to eating way too much
junk food.
Research shows and most doctors agree the best kind of diet for diabetes is one that monitors the type of
carbohydrates you eat and how many of them you consume per day. Following a low carb diet or a low fat diet is all
well and good, but far more important is choosing those carbohydrates that are rich in nutrients and high in
fiber.
This means you need to be eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables in particular the leafy green vegetable and
berries as they are very low in carbs, but full of nutrition.
While you need to have a little fat in your diabetic diet you need to eat the right kind of fat and limit
the amount of it you eat. At all costs you should avoid any form of saturated fats, choosing instead to eat
foods that contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Not only have these fats been shown to help with
diabetes, but they can help with weight loss and keeping your heart healthier.
For those who are pregnant and may have gestational diabetes, diet can help you to control the diabetes without
having to resort to using medications that while they are not supposed to affect your baby may cause problems. The
same low cab diet can be used by those who are pregnant as with anyone who has diabetes type 2 , you need to eat your carbs, but you need
to eat the healthy carbs and proteins, your proteins should come from lean sources like fish , chicken, turkey and
legumes. At all costs you should avoid red meats as they can actually negatively affect the way your body
metabolizes glucose.
In the beginning learning to eat healthy and control your diabetes can be a challenge. It means learning how to
cook all over again and for many learning to enjoy foods they never used to eat. However most find that the change
in diet means not having to use medication and makes them much healthier overall so the adventure is worth it.
